UP Cebu celebrates 3rd year of autonomy

By December Belle Cobarde

UP CEBU - Come Monday, September 23, the University of the Philippines Cebu is set to celebrate its third anniversary of autonomy with programs and activities after the passing of a memorandum from the Office of the Dean last September 5, 2013.

The memorandum contained all the committees assigned for the preparation of the whole-day celebration. After making all necessary plans and proposals, the Overall Activity Coordinating Committee now has the final set of activities to occur on Monday.

After the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Oblation Square led by Serenata, UP Cebu’s official choir, a Holy Mass will be held at the Admin Building lobby. The opening of the Joya Awardees’ Art Exhibit by the Fine Arts Students’ Organization (FASO) will mark the beginning of the program. A series of exhibitions and performances will then follow at the Cebu Cultural Center (CCC).
Presentations namely the Green Fashion Revolution, Folk Dance, Dance Fusion and Dance Sport from champions in both high school and college departments will take up most of the afternoon’s festivities. To end the day, Halad Pasalamat Service Award will be given out to retirees, faculty members, maintenance and staff for 25 years of service, and REPS who earned their M.Ed. Degree.

Keiza Empleo, a 2nd year Mass Communication student and a member of Serenata, hopes to have a fun and exciting 3rd anniversary celebration. “I wish more people would come and the programs will be very engaging to the students,” Empleo said.

Atty. Liza D. Corro, UP Cebu Dean, hopes to have a “unique and interesting program” that will set it apart from the past celebrations of UP’s autonomy. Invites have already been sent out to selected guests, the alumnae among others.

The anniversary of UP Cebu’s autonomy is originally held on the 24th of September but due to a faculty conference that required the Dean’s and the faculty’s presence on the same day, the celebration was moved to the day before. The whole-day event will run from 8am to 5pm.
